Heritage Harvest Gardens, Thorhild
We are a family owned and operated market garden, specializing in Heirloom and Heritage variety vegetables, including seed saved by our Baba over 50 years! To give our shareholders the best taste of summer possible, we grow a wide variety of vegetables. These include a dozen types of potatoes, 30 kinds of tomatoes, six kinds and colours of carrots plus dozens and dozens of squash – both summer and winter.
Our season is 15 weeks, beginning at the end of June and wrapping up with a Harvest Dinner at the end of September. Early in the season it's the first leafy greens, colourful radishes and early cabbage. Mid-summer we're overrun with summer squash, baby root vegetables, peas and fresh beans. Late summer gives us what we dream of all winter: tomatoes and corn. Lots of them! In all shapes, sizes and colours! And melons. Yes, the melons. Sweet and juicy perfection. Early fall, and the end of our season, finds us with loads of dried corn (perfect for grinding into meal), dried beans, storage potatoes and onions and carrots and cabbage and loads of winter squash.
We make sure you eat well not only all summer, but for the better part of the winter as well.
A special addition to our CSA this year is the partnership with a local pork and poultry farmer! Our CSA members can add to their weekly boxes (for additional fees) free-range rainbow eggs and foraged edibles. Plus, by season end there will be frozen whole chickens and pasture-based pork packages.
We encourage our members to come out to the farm at least a couple of times during the season to see how we grow their food. Sunday afternoons are slated for share pick-ups and Tuesdays from 5pm – 7pm we're in Edmonton (by the Clareview LRT station) for those who can't make it to the farm to get their share.
Member or not, come on out to the farm for a tour and to buy some veggies from our farm-stand. In August we'll have bulk packages of paste tomatoes, pickling cucumbers and more for all your preserving needs.
Be sure to keep up with the garden through our blog, Facebook and Twitter!
