Hi All, We will be raising chickens with people, not for people. The current plan is to order as many chickens as are pre-ordered , plus 20%. Then, depending on interest, we will divide the chore days and all costs between interested eaters of chicken and make chicken together! They would end up being about $4.50 per pound if the costs are the same as last year.
This might (hopefully) look like 8 groups of people ordering 10 to 25 each (latter works for my math better!) Kevin and I would be one of the groups and we would feed and water the chickens daily, every night. The task of filling the field bin and tank with feed and water will be evenly distributed between the families. The other 7 families or groups of familes would each take one day per week to feed, water and move the pens onto the next bit of pasture each morning. If three families wanted to share 25 birds, each one would only have to come out once every three weeks. If those families also wanted to pick strawberries, raspberries or tend a garden they would have another reason to be here too and the gas may be easier to justify. Not to mention the prairie sunshine, pond watching, goats and egg laying hens.
We will ask for an up front deposit of $200.00 each to buy the chicks and soy free feed. Our ration includes wheat, barley, oats and peas, as well as whey from our own and another cheese factory. All grains are very local (across the street) but not organic, nor are they desiccated.
We should make this decision soon! so please call me if you are interested.... REALLY call me, no emails, as I lose them and don't keep track well.
The work that you will help with as a member includes:
1. Spring cleanup of chicken coop and getting ready the brooding area.
2. Re- building and reinforcing the existing movable shelters, and fences. I sold the metal ones (thank goodness!).
3. Weekly feeding, watering and moving throughout the entire growing season and while we are away at fiddle camp. Likely three and a half months starting in mid May.
4. Collection of birds on "transfer day" (day they transfer their energy to us... Thank them!), delivery to St. Paul Processors and bringing them home again.
